This series of posts is dedicated to the many, many six packs, pony kegs and pints that have sauntered into my life at one point or another.

As I wind down my time in Beer City, USA, I’m thinking a lot about my standby beers over the eight years I’ve called this wondrous mountain town home. I’ve had plenty of beers that I’ve chased, but I’m referring to the beverages that were my defaults, always available and guaranteed to please with equal consistency. The downtown bar Jack of the Wood was one of our haunts, especially in the early days, our affection bolstered by a touch of sentiment as it was the place we went when we decided on which house to buy of the eighteen we’d seen over the course of a day-and-a-half as we were prepping for the big move from Florida. For much of the time we were quasi-regulars, Jack of the Wood was nearly exclusive in the beer they served, with the taps turned over to associated brewery Green Man. While I sampled most of their potable wares (back then, it seemed, they had a few standards and not many seasonals), the one I kept coming back to was their ESB. Now, I can’t even identify the appeal (it’s been a long time since I’ve tasted one, now indulging in the greater variety of beers they’ve developed since the local brewing scene became more competitive), but I remember it being deeply satisfying with each and every pint. Time’s a wastin’. I’d best go get another one.
