This weekend, I’ll participate in The World’s Largest Trivia ContestTM. I’m a little preoccupied with preparations for that, including some significant travel. To provide some sense of the madness of minutiae that dominates my mind this week, I’ll return to a bit of a tradition around these parts and share a few personally memorable answers from the twenty-five years or so that I’ve been involved with this contest, in one way or another. In this instance, I’ve reminded myself of the answers by flipping through our team’s old answer sheets.trivia speed

What follows is my recollection of this question and answer, which may or may not be right (there are all sorts of reasons why I write down those things that could become Trivia answers). For years and years, we had a stash of Sports Illustrated issues at our headquarters, mostly to rifle through them in the event of a relevant question from the world the publication covered. We were less and less likely to dive into those magazines and the web that spans worldwide started to make most sports information readily available through other means. This year, a question came up that we were believed might be from a print advertisement. The boxes were upended and players frantically paged through them. Finally, the ad in question was found, the answer called in, and the hefty amount of points collected. The ad in question was torn from the magazine and tacked to the wall, much like a trophy. My team is strong at a good many things. Celebrating our victories is one of them.

More info about 90FM’s Trivia can be found at its official website or at the radio station’s online home. There’s also a feature documentary about the contest, but it’s fairly hard to come by these days. To see how my team is faring over the weekend, Twitter is probably the best bet.
